What is Direct messaging?
Direct messaging (Direct) is secure, HIPAA-compliant email. Users agree to the same level of authentication, trust, and interoperability. Inpriva operates the Florida HIE’s Direct Messaging Service (DMS). As members of the DirectTrust Accredited community, Inpriva is committed to the highest level of security, privacy, and interoperability.
Direct continues to see rapid growth with over 167 million messages exchanged in 2017 among over 106,000 healthcare organizations and 1,582,373 Direct addresses and counting. Direct was originally developed for interoperable, secure messaging between healthcare providers and their business associates. It has been extended to support the needs of secure collaboration required by social services, judicial systems, public health services, patient engagement, and population health monitoring—for use whenever private and confidential communication is required.
What is required to sign up for Direct services?
Each individual or organization that uses Direct registers online for their own unique Direct certificate. The online registration asks for the organizational and/or individual information that will be associated with the Direct certificate. The online process usually takes less than 15 minutes to complete. The electronic forms become printable affidavits so you can confirm all the information you provided is true and correct. You are asked to have a notary or trusted agent verify your identity and then submit those forms as directed on the affidavits. Remember, each user of Direct is agreeing to the same level of authentication so all users can be assured of one another’s identity.
Am I required to purchase hardware, software or additional programs to use Direct?
No additional hardware or software programs are required for either the sending or receiving Direct. It’s as simple as logging into a standard email account and composing a message.
What if the person I am sending to does not have a Direct address?
When sending to a non-Direct email address, you will get a notification asking if you want to trust the recipient. Once you confirm the recipient is trusted, you can send the message. The recipient is then issued a unique temporary Direct address that can exchange with your Direct address. A unique login and password are sent to the recipient so they don’t have to register for the service, nor do they have to create or remember a password.
What about securely exchanging with an EHR?
You don’t need an Electronic Health Record (EHR) to exchange Direct messages using The Florida HIE’s Direct Messaging Service (DMS). Our Direct webmail client has a unique CCDA viewer built-in so that you can receive and read messages from an EHR with ease. I If you need to send a CCD to an EHR, the DMS webmail can do that too.
